How it is calculated
Each item is the plain, everyday product — no organic or premium varieties — and the cheapest suitable one (each match checked by hand), at the price most of the chain's branches charge. Exactly the stated amount is counted, a share of the pack rather than the whole pack, and only among the pack sizes a household buys. Chains are compared only on the items every one of them carries. Promotions and club prices are not included. A month is recorded once and never recalculated. Today the index covers 2 chains, not every supermarket in Israel.
